Unlined and unscientifically designed landfills – commonly referred to as landfills – can lead to irreversible environmental and health risks, ranging from greenhouse gas emissions, ground and surface water pollution and air pollution, surface fires. Old landfills, in fact, are a well-known source of dislocated pollution due to the generation of hazardous leachates and emissions.
To solve this problem, there is an urgent need to recover these sites to build new scientific landfills for the disposal of inert and residual solid waste, as well as to increase the life of the landfills (called “landfill capacity extension”). ). Additionally, legacy waste buried in landfills needs to be treated and recycled for lucrative applications.
The Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 has given a clear mandate to all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in India to complete the remediation of their existing landfills by 2023 (for cities under 10 lakh) and by 2024 ( for cities over 10 lakh). population) in accordance with environmentally friendly methods. The country will therefore take up this colossal challenge to remediate more than 1,300 million tons of legacy waste over the next two to three years. The technical capacity of ULBs and other actors would play a central role in dealing with such a colossal volume and in preventing such discharges from reoccurring.
The Center for Science and the Environment (CSE) has worked on policy and implementation with respect to municipal solid waste (MSW) management at regional, national and global levels. He recognizes the need to adopt resource-efficient waste management regimes, based on which he conceptualized this eight-day online training program on landfill remediation and landfill management.
The objective of the course is to provide state-of-the-art knowledge on landfill design and operation, as well as technology and policy interventions in landfill remediation projects. Training participants will have the opportunity to learn about the various challenges of landfill management and landfill remediation in developing economies from leading national and international subject matter experts and practitioners in solid waste. Specialist areas such as sustainable landfill practices, landfill design and operations, and landfill mining, including feasibility, preliminary investigation, operation and management of landfill mining landfills and the impact of landfill mining on the sustainable waste management system will be extensively covered.
- Location, design, construction and operation of a landfill
- Concept of landfill remediation, biomining and bioremediation
- Landfill Remediation and Landfill Mining Case Studies (National and International Perspectives)
- Zero landfill city – approaches and strategies
- Sustainable waste management (including recycling, composting and energy recovery from waste) and waste economics, including business development of waste
Who will benefit from the training:
- Solid Waste Practitioners
- Academicians and students
- Solid waste experts
- Civil servants of various urban local bodies
- Waste management professionals
Participants will receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the program.
