Asia-Africa e-learning program: making the data talk

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is the world’s greatest environmental health risk: it kills around seven million people worldwide each year. More than 91 percent of us live in areas where air pollution exceeds guidelines considered safe; nine out of ten people breathe polluted air every day; and 4.2 million premature deaths occur each year from exposure to air pollution. The State of the World Air Report 2020 says it is the fourth risk factor for premature death worldwide. In fact, over 90% of the world’s children breathe toxic air every day.

As governments and countries around the world recognize this deadly killer and its potential to wreak havoc and produce statistics, it is essential to understand the numbers and what they are really telling us – only then that we can communicate effectively about the state of the air we breathe. , the magnitude of the problem or its main causes, the impacts on health and society, and the actions needed to control it. Evidence-based communication, using data, is essential to inform air quality interventions and save lives.

The Center for Science and Environment (CSE), one of South Asia’s leading think tanks on development, environment and climate change policy, invites you to join its global online training program focuses specifically on one aspect essential to meeting this challenge: understanding the air pollution and health data, analyzing them and using them to communicate and tell stories about the urgency of this “environmental and health crisis”.

The program is designed to inform about established and new trends and approaches in data-driven development communications for effective presentation and maximum impact. It will also present analytical tools and popular conceptual frameworks, and offer an overview of the legal and policy framework to better understand the numbers on air pollution, health and the economy.

What are you going to learn?

  • Data Collection: Find out how and where to search for relevant data on air pollution, health, and related development indicators.
  • Data Analysis: Develop skills to analyze and interpret trends in air pollution, health, science and impacts.
  • Data Visualization: Learn to visualize data for effective communication.
  • Report writing: develop skills to process, visualize and transform “air pollution and health” data into simple, compelling and informative “messages”, “reports”, “communication media” and stories for print and the Web.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The online program at your own pace will include video lectures, presentations, tutorials, quizzes and homeworks. Participants will also have the opportunity to work on an in-depth project of their choice. The program will also feature three interactive live sessions to meet the trainers and other participants.

The program has been designed in such a way that it can be supplemented with regular employment or studies.

The training is broken down into five modules:

  • Module 1: Understanding the challenges of urbanization, air quality and health impacts
  • Module 2: Data for effective communication and informed decision-making on air quality and health risks
  • Module 3: Find the right data on air quality, health and development
  • Module 4: Data processing and analysis to make the data meaningful
  • Module 5: Data visualization

All who attend and complete the course will be evaluated by the course coordination team. The CSE and AAETI will award certificates of attendance to all who attend and complete the course.
